Damage Control: How To Survive a Hangover

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Banging headache? Greasy skin? A belly fit to burst? Can you still taste white wine in your mouth? That ‘special’ cider that you got in the hamper from Auntie Marge? That Duff beer that your other half was given by a work colleague? (Yes, it does exist outside of The Simpsons – you can buy it on Firebox.com)

Don’t worry, we’re all in the same boat. Calm down, dear, and look at this situation sensibly: you’re not going to die. It may feel like it at this present moment, as you read this on your iPhone with your head hanging off the side of the bed/resting on the loo-seat, but you’ll live. I promise – and I’m an expert at these things. Follow my five-step programme and you’ll be absolutely right as rain!

1) Re-hydrate. This is the most important step in the emergency Boxing Day recovery plan. Get some water down you – nice and cold. If at all possible, add a ‘Resolve’ or an Alka-Seltzer, either of which will help with headache, dodgy tum and that general sense of wanting to stick your head in the Magimix. It’s amazing how something so simple and obvious as drinking water often gets overlooked. A couple of pints of lovely, fresh H20 works absolute wonders!

2) Get some good grub down you. I don’t see anything wrong with a bacon-and-egg butty when you’re feeling crap – who wants wheatgrass shots and muesli when they feel as though half of Animal Farm has done a poo inside their head?! (Ugh. Sorry.) Even better than a bacon sarnie, in my opinion, is pancakes and bacon. With maple syrup. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Obviously none of this is going to do your waistline any favours, but you can deal with that issue later on in the day when your head has stopped spinning…

3) Emergency skin overhaul. You need a face mask and you need it quick – but it has to be one that actually does something, not some namby-pamby relaxation potion. Top picks? Alpha-H Liquid Gold Mask – simply AMAZING. More on that next year but, if you have it, use it. Dermalogica Multivitamin Mask (£28 from LookFantastic.com)  – a long-term fave, if you get Glossybox you’ll have a little sample of this lying about somewhere. Use it. Those who are passing the supermarket might be able to find Neutrogena’s Visibly Clear 2-in-1 Mask which I think is a super little deep-cleanser. Leave this tingly clay mask on for a while and you’ll be left with sparkly fresh skin. Don’t really know why they feel the need to put menthol in the formula, but still – it’s a great one for the price! Pick it up with your milk and bread and emergency rations! If you have any bath salts (you can pick up a huge box of dead sea salts from Boots for a few pounds) then tip a whole load into a warm bath and have a good long soak as your mask gets to work. Don’t operate heavy machinery afterwards, though (all of you truck drivers) as the salt bath renders you wobbly and entirely useless.

4) Go for a walk. I am utterly serious – I know at this present moment walking is the last thing on your mind, but at some point today you are going to take a walk. It doesn’t have to be far – if you’re in a terrible state, just try hobbling in your dressing gown to the end of the garden and back (HAHA!) but get out in the fresh, chilly air and you’ll feel miles better. Burning off some of that big roast dinner, getting oxygen into those chocolate-coated lungs..

5) Get back on that festive roll and have a glass of champagne – the holidays aren’t over yet! (OK, just thinking about champagne just made me heave…)

(Legal note: this is obviously all supposed to be taken with a pinch of salt – if you have actual alcohol poisoning then please do pop along to A&E – a bacon sarnie won’t fix you, neither will a face mask.)

Hi, hope you had a Merry Christmas hun? Sorry I havn’t written anything for ages (I apologize) but I have been reading everything. I have 2 of the face masks you mentioned (the Alpha H & Dermalogica) The Alpha H is an absolutely brilliant mask and really wakes up your skin and gives it a lovely glow to your skin, makes it really smooth & plump plus takes away any greyness you might have (but don’t put it on your eyes or too near the eyes otherwise you may have tears NOT of joy at how good your skin looks! Lol) It is such a quick worker also. The Dermalogica is brilliant also and you can leave it on overnight also and when you wake up and clean your skin it will feel soooo smooth and also give you a luminous, glowing skin. One other of my favourites also is the Gatineau Melatogenine Futur Plus mask and this one is an absolute godsend! You can put it all over your face (YES,even the eyes)and leave it on for 10 mins or leave it on overnight and your skin will look fantastic it plumps and hydrates your skin, makes it really smooth, makes any lines/wrinkles disappear, takes away any greyness/blackess (especially around your eyes from when you have had too many tipples or have had a lousy nights sleep) and makes your skin bloom you will just keep touching your face because it feels sooooo smooth and soft Lol. I love my face masks and must admit out of all the masks i’ve tried (and i’ve tried loads & loads) those 3 are the best(the Gatineau, Alpha H & Dermalogica)Yes they are not cheap but they are not expensive either and really do what they promise (unlike some) and more and would not be without those 3 they area staple in my diet Oooops I mean beauty regime! Lol
Hope Santa brought you all you wanted BTW! Santa brought me all I wanted and more I was blown away as to how nice and good he was to me this year (NOTHING I want to take back or sell or put away into a black hole never to be used! Lol)
Hope you have a lovely Boxing Day and New Year also xxx

Happy Christmas! I recommend going for a run! I dragged my over-fed and slightly hung-over self out of bed for a 6 mile run this morning (damn marathon training) and I feel so much better now. Back on the stodgy food and booze later today though! xx

I have missed you too (well the not commenting and my long comments (well I can talk for England! Lol)) I have been un-well and busy at work also! But rest assured I have been reading your daily blogs (as I have them pop up and see me every morning! Lol)& love reading them! I have picked up so many hints & tips from you (and spent a lot too! LMAO) I love your blogs and look forward to reading them! If must be a couple of years now that I have been talking away on here and writing more than about 5 people put together??!! Lol
Did Santa bring you all you wanted? He nearly did for me but he forgot Keanu Reeves! I think he must have been a bit tipsy from all the drinks that were left out for him on Christmas Eve night because he had been clearing some leaves out the way so I think he read it as Keen Leaves NOT Keanu Reeves??? PMSL
I’ve just brought loads of things from my sale expedition today! Whoop whoop! I even got (from the House Of Fraser) a Decleor set(the only one there) which was £39 down to £13.50 and when I opened it up outside (showing my mum) there was more than there should have been in there it had an extra 2 items!!!! Lucky or what???!! Doing more Sales tomorrow with my mum again so that is going to be great fun and i’m looking forward to spending even more money!!!! Lol
Have you started or been to any sales yet? I brought quite a few sale items on-line 23 dec, Christmas Eve (the on-line started theirs on 23 Dec & Christmas eve because there was no way you would get the items for Christmas) & yesterday! I have been in my element and spent loads of money but all worth it! Lol! xxx

@Natasha ha! Yes, it must be coming up for two years, although this .com site will only be two in May, so it’s probably more like one and a half! Still very much appreciated! Glad you had a nice Christmas – lucky you with the sales shopping, I’m about to do some online perusing!! xxx

Ah, hope you all feel better soon! – meanwhile, get some Milk Thistle, your liver will thank you during the rest of the hols, and beyond. Anyone who drinks should make sure they have this! Also alleviates morning sluggishness, and PMS! Makes you feel better ‘cos it helps your liver work! xxx

TBH I have lost track of time and this year has flown by! Where did this year go? Lol! I remember when I first signed up on here there were just a handful (well a few more than a handful! Lol) of us and now look at you Ruth! But you deserve all the recognition, members etc you have received for this site as it is a brilliant site and sooooo helpful and ….. You are such a nice, lovely person to talk to on here also (Pay me later Ruth Lol)! I dread to think how much perusing will be done by yourself but I think your bank manager might be gasping for air and having a panic attack if he/she has seen you saying that? Lol! I have brought soooo much stuff in the last 5 days which some I am waiting for it to be delivered (woo hoo when it is)the last 3 days have shattered me and tomorrow I am staying in and I won’t look on-line either honestly (a wry smile emerges) When I will be glad to go back to work next week for a rest! LMAO xxx

I’m a Dane. I spend 28% of my time being hungover – fact! The only thing that works for me is 1 litre of non-diet coke, a shower and going for a walk (to get fish and chips). Sometimes I’m so nauseaus that I can’t even eat…this combined with being a med student (it’s true, we drink too much and tell other people not to) caused me to lose 2 kg. Now that is one diet I wouldn’t recommend to anyone lol

@Ida that’s hardcore!!!! The full-fat coke thing is excellent, but it does make my teeth squeaky! xxx
