How To: Get Glowing Model Skin

I originally filmed this video in March 2011, but I had to take it down because of issues with the intro. I was annoyed because it had been my most viewed video EVER, but when I was in LA I found the original video file in my MacBook backup folder! So here it is, re-edited and slightly more succinct than it was to begin with – some little improvements made here and there, some of the ‘waffle’ cut out, some of the product info links updated.

Those of you who saw it the first time around might want to have a look for old time’s sake – you can even go back to the original post if you want! It can be seen here: How I Get Glowing Model Skin.

Newer readers have got a real treat – I love this video. I love dewy, glowy products that make skin look incredible without being glittery or brash, I love the creamy and light textures of all of the products used. It’s the most common ‘look’ requested on fashion  and beauty shoots – clients always want models’ skin to look impossibly healthy but completely natural. A ‘glow from within’ rather than some shimmer slapped on the surface!

So here are some gorgeous bits and pieces ready to be layered up, worn alone, dabbed along the cheekbones or mixed in with moisturisers. Further product details can be found by clicking the relevant link below the video pane. Enjoy!

    Dear Ruth,

I discovered your blog just over a week ago ( I think I must have followed a link from another beauty blog) and I just wanted to say I love it!

I have always been a product junkie so your blog is perfect for me and I love your style of writing. My daughter has called me your silent stalker as it seems that lately, if i’ve got my i-pad in hand, you can almost guarantee I’m looking at your site (well, I’ve got a lot of back-dated entries to read!!) I have caught her reading it too, it must be said – she’s studying beauty therapy (Henley in Arden College) so your blog is “right up her street” too!!

You have cost me rather a lot of money over the past week!! Avene products, eye cream, body brush, spin pins to name a few!!

Now here’s the funny thing – since I have been raving about your blog/you, I have discovered that you went to the same school as my kids!!! St Mary’s in Studley and that your Mum was a teacher there (definately whilst my daughter was there). My kids are younger, 17 and 15, but I’m sure you were probably there at the same time as my twin nieces – Claire and Rachel Jackson – wonder if you remember them? To coin a phrase – “it’s a small world”!!

Anyway, I shall be checking in most days to see what you can entice me to go out and purchase!! Keep up the good work!!

      Hi Lisa!
How funny, it IS a small world! I’m going to ask my Mum about Claire and Rachel so that she can jog my memory. I recognise the names, but it might be because they were in either my brother’s year (2 years above) or my sister’s – 4 years below! I will let you know!

        Hi Ruth,
Only just read your reply to my post because I thought my comments hadn’t posted. I’ve since left another comment on the Dr Murad post in which I mention you going to the same school so you’ll think I’m a bit mad!!!! Anyway, I think Claire and Rachel were probably in the year below you and the year above your sis.

        Still loving all the posts.

        Lisa xx

Thanks fo the reviews Ruth. i like products that give your a golden glow, but I have oily skin. do you think some one with oily skin can wear something like this? not sure… i always end up looking soo shiny its embarrassing. even with just foundation.

your skin looks soooo beautiful in this video btw. i guess its all those products

Yes, you could use a matt primer and then some glow on top, but I will admit it’s more of a battle for oily skin! xx

Hey Ruth! Love watching your videos. Do you think you could do a video about how you stay in shape in the modeling world?

  8. May 9, 2012 / 11:19 pm

    Hi Ruth,

Just to say thanks for this brilliant piece! I have just splurged on Glamglow Mud Mask, Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser, Becca Eye Tint in Vicuna & Sisley Phyto in Mat! I’ve heard loads about Nubo Diamond Peel & Reveal. Is it as good as it sounds?

    Hello Ruth,

Do you considerat Liz Earle Brightening Mask a quimical exfoliat or more a pick-me-up mask?

    Many thanks

    • Ruth
      June 13, 2012 / 5:45 am

@Joana it does have lactic acid in (I think?!) to exfoliate, but you only leave it on for 30 seconds or so, so I put it in the quick pick-me-up category personally! x

Quick question regarding Urban Decay brightening primer: is it nicer than Laura Mercier illuminating primer?? which one gives a nicer finish?? and what is the main difference??

    • Ruth
      June 26, 2012 / 9:44 pm

The LM is SUPREMELY shiny. I almost can’t handle it, actually! It can look a bit greasy-skin if not used with caution! The UD is easier to control! x
