The Amazing, All-New M&S Beauty Department!

I’m going to cut straight to the chase with this, because it’s late and I’m tired. I have been sat on the tube trying to think of some witty one-liners involving cotton knickers and my penchant for M&S value packs of tights, but I really can’t summon up the brainpower needed to sculpt a fine body of writing full of double-entendres and teasing, suspense-creating sentences.

M&S has launched a new beauty department. It’s amazing. I’m not even kidding you. It was all a bit top-secret until today and I was really expecting to turn up to HIgh Street Kensington (the first M&S to have the department) and view a few rows of shelves with own-brand cosmetics and bottles of Magnolia bath foam. (There is nothing, I repeat nothing wrong with M&S own brand – they do some fantastic products. But you know where I’m coming from here? I didn’t expect to be getting my 100% cotton knickers in a twist over anything!)

So what did I see instead? Only what looked like the inside of Space NK, a beautifully lit space with aisle upon aisle of incredible brands! When I say incredible, I really mean incredible. The first one that caught my eye? FILORGA! Yes, the very Filorga that we mourned on Sunday when House of Fraser were selling off the last of their stock! Finally, Filorga will be entirely accessible in the UK. And a great natural Greek brand called Apivita. And an Icelandic skincare range called Skyn. And so, so many more!

Is this not just shocking you to the very core? I couldn’t actually believe it as I wandered around – it was as though someone had been reading A Model Recommends and then decided to play a trick on me! Besides the incredible brands on offer (Roger & Gallet, NUXE, Murad, Leighton Denny) there are trained beauty advisors who can help you with makeovers and skin consultations. They don’t work on commission or have any loyalty to a particular brand, so it’s great unbiased advice.

I think that this beauty department will be an amazing development for Marks & Spencer – taking on niche and hard-to-find brands gives them an edge above the typical “department store” offering of Clarins and Clinique and other mainstream brands. They have obviously given a lot of thought to the direction that they wanted this beauty department to go in, and I think that they’ve got it spot-on: modern, intelligent, considered. I’m quite taken aback. I’m going to go back there and have a proper browse, so expect some mini-reviews of the exclusive brands soon.

If you live in West London, go and visit. If you live elsewhere, then there will be a bit of a pause before the beauty paradise reaches your store – I think the next opening is in Westfield Stratford and then by this time next year, there will be 100 departments open. But why wait?

Yes, the online beauty department has opened and you can browse at your leisure. Dangerous times, people. Dangerous times.

You’re going to enjoy Apivita :)
I’ve tried a lot of theirs so far and they make some great facial masks.
Cheap in price and you get a whooping amount to cover your face twice or very thick.
If you need any recs give me a shout.

Thanks Phil! I have tried a few things when staying in expensive Greek hotels, but can’t wait to try the masks and so on. Everything I’ve tried so far has been excellent! x

Oooh nice. I hardly ever, ever go to High St Ken though. Glad they’ll be selling Murad in there, that’s pretty cool.

Ruth, I *almost* didn’t read this as thought it wasn’t relevant and was imagining an array of M&S own brands but ever-faithful and captivated by your blog I am I clicked on the Twitter link and…..Lord. Have. Mercy. Filorga! Nuxe! Murad!

    Hello M&S Beauty Hall!

You really do have your finger on the button :) xx

And this is precisely the sort of thing that I want to do when I go to London. I love browsing through Boots, M&S, etc. I call them “contemporary museums.” You’ve just brought it all up another notch. Everything looks beautiful. Until I get to London, I guess I’ll have to live vicariously through you, Ruth. Thanks for the great photos!

I like the M&S products, I have tried the anti-cellulite cream lately (don’t remember the exact name and don’t have it with me now). But I’m glad to hear that some rare brands are stocked now! Thanks for letting us know!

Just FYI, skyn Iceland is an American brand. It gets the iceland in its name from using icelandic ingredients, specifically icelandic glacial water. Skyn iceland is a cult brand here and is great for sensitive skin. If anyone hasn’t tried it, then they should pickup the travel set (called the detox kit in the US) to get an idea of the brand.

        • May 31, 2012 / 11:47 pm

Sarah: my travel set just came in and I’ll be trying it tonight. Thanks! Can’t wait to see how it all feels.

  9. May 23, 2012 / 6:56 am

Wow, get down with your bad selves M&S. Very impressive! Apivita is a truly fantastic brand, I absolutely adore their products.

  10. May 23, 2012 / 7:25 am

I’m at that age where I appreciate M&S (ha ha) so this is great to see, love the department design, I’ve always wanted to take a closer look at Nuxe & Apivita. Shame I don’t live in London but I will be taking a look online especially if the free delivery to local store applies on beauty :)

@Sugarpuffish report back on that for me, would you? xx

  11. May 23, 2012 / 7:35 am

Yes! They stock H20+ online and deliver to France :) I have been willing to try this brand for so long I can now splurge for some goodies!
Or I will spare some money to buy the Sisley flower mask on sale… Or both :p

    • Ruth
      May 23, 2012 / 11:47 am

Oooh, I haven’t tried H20! Maybe that should be on my shopping list when I go back! x

  12. May 23, 2012 / 8:26 am

It looks amazing! I wonder how long it’ll take before we start seeing them up north..?

Thats amazing !!!! ya im so happy!!Even though i live in leeds and it make take 5 years to get to our Town store. Filorga is a brand tha has amazed me. The Sleep and Peel is a skin changer, literally over night my face looked amazing, the vitamin C Ampoules are so powerful. The Hero product that can actually chabnge your face from the one use is the Meso mask!! one application and my face is brigher and firmer and looks so fab. When Hourse of fraiser stopped selling the brand i was mortified :) now i dont have to be any more :)

    • Ruth
      May 23, 2012 / 11:46 am

@Daniel yes, I remember you saying about Filorga! I love both of those products too.. They only have 4 Filorga things online, but I’m hoping they’ll increase that as time goes on.. It costs a fortune to order from France, shipping is a nightmare! x

  14. May 23, 2012 / 9:51 am

Nice one Marks! I am actually in Shock!!! Amazed !! No more Royal Jelly or Evening Primrose sets for me at Chrimbo ta very much people!!

    • Ruth
      May 23, 2012 / 11:45 am

@Kate yes! Big bonus! Now all they need to do is train the assistants to swoop in on women who look like they’re buying soap sets for their daughters and say STOP! Go to the NUXE aisle! Ban them from the Evening Primrose… x

      • May 23, 2012 / 10:17 pm

LOL! So right! You said it!!!!!!

        January 26, 2013 / 4:29 pm

haha! Am an assistant at the Beauty Hall in Camberley and will ensure I point all the well-meaning relatives in the right direction! :)

  15. May 23, 2012 / 10:32 am

This sounds amazing! Well worth a trip to the store for me :) Lucky it will be a sunny weekend!
Also the idea to have independent advisers is brilliant! I love beauty departments, but it is so hard when you want to make cross brand purchases and the sales person from one brand tries to sell you 100 things at the same time!

    • Ruth
      May 23, 2012 / 11:44 am

Exactly, Diana. I always feel really under pressure! Makes you want to run and hide.. x

Hey Ruth, do you know if the website ships to Poland? Or if this new beauty range will be available in all M&S stores in Europe (like our Polish ones)?

    • Ruth
      May 23, 2012 / 11:43 am

@Madii don’t think there are plans for the stores abroad, check the website for delivery countries!! x

Oooh, I will have to pop over in my lunch break and check it out, it will be good to see Apvita as it’s been a long time since I have seen their products in person.

Holy Moly!! This beauty hall which actually sells something other than M&S’s own products probably came at a really convenient time (19% fall in profits)and it’s the right moment that this british institution moves on and branch out a little! I’m super interested in the brands which are not accessible on the highstreet and it’s a genius idea that M&S have decided to stock them (like you mentioned Filorga and Nuxe). Shame I don’t live in London, hopefully the beaty hall will make it’s way to Manchester soon!

  19. May 24, 2012 / 11:22 am

I’m excited! Thanks for posting the online link chicka.

Will have to get looking! Have only ever purchased one beauty product from M&S and it was the Perfection illuminating bronzer powder (I am just close to finishing it). Actually considering buying it again so was reading some more reviews on it to see how it compares and noticed you actually reviewed it a while back (encouraging!). I am bit done with splurging out on expensive products, especially bronzer when there are others that do a similar if not better job, the whole hype around the Guerlain bronzer, I just don’t get it? I am tempted by the Chanel though x

    Hi Ruth,
    Truly exciting stuff!
FYI, your tweet links are not working properly. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but you might want to look into that. x
