top five skincare brands

I’ve done a little run-down of the top five skincare ranges of 2012. Now I’m talking about entire ranges here, not about individual products. If I did a top five products then the list might look a little different – this is a video about complete (or almost complete) ranges that I’ve tried, tested and loved. I should do a top products video, really, and perhaps I’ll try and do that early next year – things like the Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask and StriVectin‘s SD Eye Cream would definitely be way up there in the higher realms of my list!

Details about each of the five ranges are below the video pane, should you wish to click for more details or prices. I hope that this video is helpful for people who feel a little lost when confronted with a thousand different brands, all claiming to do different things. Each of the brands I talk about have a very comprehensive range of products that are quite clearly labelled as to their purpose and effect. Many of the products have been reviewed in reasonable depth here on A Model Recommends, so do use the search box at the top of the page to have a little explore!

Hi Ruth! I knew your youtube channel & blog a few days ago and I´m already big fan of them, I´d like to ask you a couple of questions, I´d like to try the alpha h range but I live in the south of Spain where it´s summer almost all year round and I´m afraid acids and sun are enemies… what do you recommend? And I´d like to tell you something you might be interested, there is a pharmacy “miracle cream” which has become massively popular here because a very famous 60 year old spectacular woman dropped in a flight without realizing. The cream is pure collagen, aloe vera & asian spark extract, it´s 5€ and you won´t find a bad review on it, just the opposite, how often would you use a product like this?
Thanks in advance and keep being so kind and real! I ♥ you!

hey Ruth, i discovered your website lately and i love it! You seem very enthousiastic about the Alpha-h products and i’d like to try some of them to. I live in France and i’ve never seen this brand before, do you know if there’s any store that sells alpha-h products in france?

    Hi Ruth,

I am a big fan of the Laroche Posay range, amazing efficacy for a great price point here in Canada. Just recommended Effaclar Duo to a friend after reading your post and it totally cleared up the spots she’s had for a year!!

Working for a skincare company I often find myself mixing up my LP products with an alarming amount of other targeted products which often I cannot resist trying for “research purposes” of course :)

Most products target specific concerns and before I know it, after cleansing, toning, exfoliating and hydrating I am on layer 6 of product!!!

Recently I began thinking that perhaps beyond layer 2 the product on top is unlikely to penetrate and work its magic, it also might be reacting to the product underneath creating an undesired ‘situation’ on my face? non?

I was wondering if you could do a post, discuss or explain how you go about layering your daily routine products and how you go between and layer your targeted regimens.

All the best from Canada !

  4. Hei Ruth ! thank you for your videos , helps a lot ! I wanted to ask do you think one should change their products , by this I mean : if we have say 5 different creme’s from all different line’s , should I change every other day or month ? what do you think ? thank you , kisses from France

  5. [...] Various skin treatments did help to keep my skin clear at various points, and I will hold up La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Duo as one of my heros, but it was quite a dire situation. Model + Temperamental Skin = [...]

Do you apply efflaclar duo all over the face or just to breakout areas?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone had issues with beautybay shipping times? I purchased an Alpha H renew and resurface kit on 7.01.2013 and I am still waiting on it to get to me…I only live in Germany and the shipping times are supposed to be 5-7 days? Honestly, I would rather have paid the 12€ for a shipping service with tracking had I known it would be such an issue. Is this normal? I would be happy for any feedback…customer service sadly is not very helpful.

Hey : ] I had the same problem, took a few weeks for my first delivery and I’m in the Netherlands. Next order though, only took a couple of days, so who knows…. Hopefully it’ll arrive soon!

  8. Mehreen says:

Hey Ruth! As someone who is suffering with the lowest amount of self esteem ever, which is the best Roche – Posay acne product? I’m deciding between the Duo and the K after reading your post. Is it me or do they both seem like the same thing? I have quite bad bumpy skin with my spots staying underneath and very bad blemishes too. Could you investigate for me and see what the difference is between the both!? Thanks, Mehreen xxx : )

    • Lisa says:

Hi Mehreen! I have tried both products (the UK/Europe version without benzoyl peroxide) and I prefer the K as I find it to be more moisturizing to the combination parts of my skin, and it contains retinol, which is vitamin A (my fave ingredient). I think maybe the Duo would be a good start for you and then you could switch over to the K once you have noticed an improvement, as I was told the K is more for ‘maintenance’, if that makes sense? Hope that helped a bit!

      • Mehreen says:

Hi Lisa, thanks for your advice! I’ve decided to order the Duo, not sure if it is the UK version or not. How can you tell? I used one of the Amazon links above to order it. Do you mind me asking how long it took before you saw an improvement? I’ve heard different ways to use the Duo, is it an ‘all over face’ product or a ‘individual spot’ treatment? I can’t wait to try it though! Have you used any of the Roche cleansers!? I was thinking of giving them a try……

        • Lisa says:

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you! I hope you like the duo, it worked very quickly (2-3 days) for me! Which formulation you purchase should be evident by the price, the european version is 15€ and the North American version is a much more expensive $35, and if not, I would think you could find out by looking at where it was shipped from :) The last clue would be the ingredients, if it contains Benzoyl Peroxide, it is the North American version and should only be used as a spot treatment, or you might experience some majorly dry and flaky skin. I have tried both the gel and mousse form of the Effaclar ‘deep cleansing’ cleansers, they are great, but quite drying. I find the foam version makes my skin feel less tight afterwards! Maybe you can get some samples from a pharmacy/chemists/apothecary dependent on where you live? :) I hope it works for you!

I’m very impressed that you have my two favorite lines. Paula’s Choice and La Roche-Posay. I have religiously tried and read about skin care products since I was about 16. I have very sensitive skin and I’m frugal, and these two lines are worth every penny!

I only switched to La Roche-Posay because I live in France now, and that is what my dermatologist recommended.

  10. Love Alpha-H and Murad. Great blog. Xx

  11. Natalie Lyall says:

Hi Ruth just wondered if you have tried any of the Sunday Riley skincare products? Xx

  12. teadivamuse says:

Great video. I am a Paula’s Choice devotee of more than 10 years, My skin is less dry now than it was ten years ago, more glowing, smooth and even in texture. I love your uber natural look here in this video especially the MLBB look of your mouth-it’s gorgeous. Hope you will do a tutorial.
