A MODEL RECOMMENDS

I’ve had an idea that I think is quite exciting. I hope it’s exciting, anyway – you might beg to differ. But hear me out. I want to offer a space in my sidebar (the big one to the furthest right of the page) to be used by one blog or independent website each month as a way of driving traffic and increasing their audience. There are thousands of people out there working hard at their blogs, whether as a hobby or a career and it’s incredibly difficult to get yourself seen and increase your audience, so this is just a way that I think I can provide a bit of help.

This Blog Spotlight will be free each and every month, and awarded to the person who best satisfies the entry requirements – I’ve detailed these below. I was going to draw it on a completely random basis, but then thought that it would be fairer if there was some kind of entry system. Of course I welcome feedback on this – as usual, it’s just me sat here with my crazy ideas! Things can get out of hand when your chief sounding board just happens to be a cat…

What You Get in the Blog Spotlight:

1) A 300×250 adspace in the far right sidebar linking to your blog or independent website. The ad will be placed below any paid advertising that is running and will appear on every pageview (over 700,000 of them per month.)

2) A guest post of your creation (see below) with a link to your blog or website at the bottom and a short bio and description of what you do.

What you need to do to enter:

1) Leave a comment below with your name and the name of your blog/website, making sure there’s a way for me to contact you. If you sign into the comments (Disqus) with your Twitter, Facebook or email then I’ll already have these in my system. If you sign in with a made-up name or anonymously, rectify that situation!

2) In your comment, tell me in approximately 50 words what you’d like to guest post about. It doesn’t have to be about beauty or fashion, just whatever takes your fancy that you think would make an interesting, engaging post.

The Rules:

1) Anyone of any age may enter this monthly Blog Spotlight competition, but if you’re under 16 then I’ll need your parent’s permission to feature you on A Model Recommends. You must, however, own the blog or website that you’re entering and the work must be all yours.

2) Your blog does not have to be a beauty or fashion blog! It can be a tiny blog with two followers or a bigger blog with hundreds, though I would say that if you have an enormous following already (you’ll know who you are!) then it would be nice to leave it more open to newer and smaller bloggers.

3) All entries must be in by the 20th day of the month to be considered for the following month. We are now in March, so the cut-off date will be 20th March and the winner of the Blog Spotlight will be contacted by the 27th at the latest so that they have time to create an ad and write their post.

4) I always have a huge work backlog, so dates are at my discretion. Sometimes it’ll all run a bit late – that’s just life I’m afraid!

5) The winner will be judged upon their 50 word guest post idea but also their blog – the quality and originality of posts, frequency with which they appear, use of social media platforms to build an audience, that kind of thing. It won’t be a precise, scientific kind of judging because it really can’t be – of course it’s going to be somewhat subjective but that can’t be helped!

6) I reserve the right to employ helper judges if there are lots of entries but my decision will be final. I also reserve the right to withdraw an offer if for some reason the winning blog or website subsequently produces content that is deemed offensive or inappropriate.

7) There is no equivalent monetary value to this monthly prize and it’s non-transferrable.

OK, I do hope that all makes sense? Please do spread the word and let people know about the Blog Spotlight - the more the merrier!

N.B. I know that you can buy ad spaces for your blog on quite a few big websites and beauty blogs – I think that’s a fantastic idea and a brilliant way to get your work seen. I’m not trying to undermine that at all, just hoping to give a bit of a boost to one person a month!

Hello Ruth, I think this is such a wonderful idea! I would like to be part of this project and I could either do a blog post on
ACNE (I have had hormonal cystic acne for years that has cleared out completely. This will include before and after pictures, advice that works and some specific skincare product suggestions)
    or
a post on Greek beauty brands (I remember your posts and videos where you mention Korres and Apivita. Greece has more companies with a very interesting variety of products. Some are high-street, some have more of a scientific/medical profile. I thought that with the summer coming up, it will be a good guide for those that visit.)

Thank you so much for doing this! It will be interesting to get to know other peoples blogs through the project.

What a fabulous and generous idea! Submission impending.

  • talisa

Great idea! I’d love to be featured. Me and my two closest friends have started a blog and all do different things on the blog. I do beauty and food, my friend emily does fashion and becky does a mix. We could do a post about our trip out from different aspects? I can do the resteraunt/foodie side, emily could do the fashion and becky the makeup/lifestyle side! We hope you like our idea. Lots of love, BEMSA xxx

  • Janna

This is a great idea! I would love to be featured; my blog doesn’t get a whole lot of traffic but I still post because I enjoy it. I’m sort of all over the place with my blogging, anything from beauty product reviews to juice cleanses to F1 cars. I’d be happy to do a guest spot- we could call it “A non-model recommends”. Because I’m not a model, but I do enjoy recommending stuff. A lot.

My post would be about what makes people blog? What makes them
write about what they post? What makes them do the things they do?, what’s
their true passions in life and what makes them happy is it success or is it
    the simplest things in life.

  • Amy

I love it Ruth. A great way of getting to know even more blogs to enlighten me (waste away my day). I would write a post about ‘the diary of a non-blogger blogger’. It would be a tongue in cheek account of how I am desperate for my blog to be noticed.

  • Amy

Just goes to show what a rubbish blogger I am. My blog is amyknowsbestuk.blogspot.co.ik

  • http://twitter.com/SeventhSphinx The Seventh Sphinx

Ha! This is so inspiring that I’m investigating better hosting options for my blog so as to be able to have more flexibility and control, which I’d been putting off. Kind of like cleaning house when someone might come over (but you’re not sure if they are actually coming).

  • Sam

    Lovely idea and so generous!
    My blog is http://www.ohmissb.blogspot.co.uk
I blog about recovering from an eating disorder whilst at uni so would do a post on how difficult recovering in the 21st century is – an era that is obsessed with size, looks and perfectionism.

    • Ola

That’s such a great idea for a blog, Sam. All the best in your recovery!

      • Sam

        Aw, thank you! :)

I would guest post about a brilliant skin product I have been trying. I won’t say what it is (that will defeat the purpose) but I got it while in Florida at Xmas at Sephora so its easily accessible to most readers and its a great product for skin so would be in keeping with your website!

Great idea! Unfortanetly I blog in Dutch, so I don’t think you’ll understand one word of it, hahaha

I’d love to write a post featuring homemade face masks and their benefits on the skin. It’s something I haven’t tried out yet so I’d love to have an excuse to give it a go.

Brilliant idea and so sweet of you! I’m currently moving house & prepping for law school so I’ve neglected my blog and I’m afraid it has taken up permanent residence on the back burner, but I excitedly look forward to seeing some new blogs in the spotlight:)

  • Kitty

    Hi Ruth,
I only read blogs but just want to let you know this is a fab idea!

    * hope you are feeling better.

  • http://twitter.com/the_non_blonde Gaia Fishler

Dear Ruth, I was going to say that I hope I may be considered for the spotlight even though both my blog and I are a bit older and somewhat established. I was about to offer a post about beauty shopping in NYC or maybe a spring perfume primer. Then I saw the comment above from the young woman going through chemo and my heart broke a little. I hope she’s the one who gets the spot.

This is a wonderful idea ruth! I’m a beauty and lifestyle blogger but for a post on here I’d like to do something about how exercise isn’t just for weightless, it’s amazing for so many other things. It helped me through an eating disorder and severe depression and helps me every single day keep happy and healthy. I’d hopefully show people it doesn’t have to be a chore!

  • Emma Thomas-Higgs

    What a fab idea!

    My blog is http://www.emsmixedbag.blogspot.co.uk – I am a beauty/lifestyle blogger.

I would probably do a post abut SS13 makeup shades and tips.

  • Slanted Stripes

    Hi, Ruth!

I’m Nazia, from the blog “Slanted Stripes”.

I would like to guest post about contouring the face, using different
textures of products. This technique, when used on editorial jobs, might
be too harsh for a daily basis — especially when walking around in bright sunlight! And sometimes, you just don’t feel like applying a heavy layer of makeup.

    Ruth~

You are an amazingly kindhearted person. You simply rock. This is not my entry…that will be along shortly.

    Cheers,
    Amie

What a fantastic idea, Ruth and so great of you to give something back, much better than a giveaway!

I’m a model and stylist and my blog is where I share tips on how to DIY charity shop finds, how to style them, how to make your own beauty products, as well as featuring behind the scenes pictures from my modelling and styling work. My aim is to deliver great lifestyle content from beauty, through fashion all the way to home, with a thrifty, ethical DIY spin to it.
