My New Look: The Bold Red Lip

red lipstick makeup tutorial

In this video I’m just trying to mix things up a bit, makeup-wise, as you do. I usually go for a nude lip on a night out, but I was in a rush when I filmed this look and I wanted to have something a little more bold and dramatic, something that would provide a “polished” finish without me having to spend too much time on my face. I think (for me at least) that a good lipline is easier to create than a stunning smokey eye – there’s less blending, it’s just a line. It is what it is. So I’ve been getting more into my bright, bold lips recently – a quick way to glam things up and give the illusion that lots of effort has been made!

Here I’ve used the Givenchy Carmin Escarpin lipstick (see here for the full review) and my current favourite full-coverage foundation, the Dior Forever. All of the product links and clothing details are below – the skirt is Milly, and you’ve probably seen it before if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram. It’s a bloody triumph, that skirt. I’m sad to see it go back to its rightful home! (Halpern PR showroom.) I’ll definitely be snapping one up when they drop into stores this summer – what a useful little skirt!

The top-to-toe video (makeup, hair, jewellery, clothes, shoes) is right at the bottom of this page or if you’re reading via email, give it a click right here. Make sure that you stay tuned right until the end – a certain little cat makes a (sleepy) appearance.

Hi Ruth! as always you look fabulous and “tres chic”!…
I’m sooo glad I found this wonderful site! Thank you for sharing all this useful information with us!
I am 47, fair complexion (blond hair, blue eyes), normal to dry skin and I live in Greece (it’ sunny most days, even in winter). I wear SPF 50 all year around. My skin is in good condition, I don’t have wrinkles (only around my eyes). I ‘ve been using ESTEE LAUDER ADVANCED NIGHT REPAIR for the last 3 years.
    Here i have some questions:
    1) Do you think I could replace it 2-3 nigths a week with ALPHA LIQUID GOLD or would it be to “strong” for me? Would it be better for me to use only during winter (when the sun is not so strong)?
    2) Which is your opinion about using DERMAROLLER? (I searched but couldn’t find anything in your site). I was recently informed about FILORGA MESOTHERAPIST. What do you think about? (I know you have already used some products by FILORGA and that you were satisfied).
Thanks a lot for your time to answer!

Gah! Is it possible to completely love someone and hate them at the same time? I love you because you’re beautiful and I hate you for the same reason! LOL!

    HI Ruth,

This is super. I love love love the idea of showing how the makeup fits into a head to toe look. Please do more of these from time to time. Possible themes:

    Weekend brunch look
    Visiting in-laws classic look
    Summer outdoor picnic

etc. I love the undone eye with the done lip and flawless base-changes your look completely from smoky eye with nude lip combo, instantly creating a statement look.
