June Favourites: Books and Beauty

books and beauty

Beauty favourites were a bit thin on the ground, last month, but I did do quite a bit of reading so I’ve shared this video between reading recommendations and beautifying tips. The Anne Tyler book (here) is just a beautifully gentle, slow-paced novel, examining the relationships within a family and gradually revealing more and more about their backstory. It’s not a “page-turner” (that’s not really what Anne Tyler does) but I still looked forward to getting back to it every night before bed – it made me very contemplative and appreciative of my own family and friends.

I’ve only just started Emma Cline’s The Girls (here) but already I’m hooked. It’s set to be quite a dark read, I think – I have tried not to look at any reviews (it’s getting a lot of publicity), but from what I gather it’s about a murderous Charles Manson-esque cult. Gritty subject matter, but the writing style, so far at least, is totally engaging – shrewd and observant but with a certain softness. I’ll report back when I’ve finished, but I think that this will be a great summer read, if you’re after one.

On with the video! A list of favourites can be found by scrolling down the page, if you don’t want to sit through my waffling…

I’ve recently finished A Spool of Blue Thread too and I loved it! Anne Tyler is one of my fave authors – I love how she just writes about ordinary people and families but it’s still soooo interesting. Nice to hear others talking about her too! :) x

I just read ‘The Girls.’ It was interesting and had me staying up waaaay too late at night to finish it.
The ending, not surprisingly, is rough and stays with you for a while!

I’ve read Anne Tyler and she’s very good. Love the look of the Saharienne bronzer. I actually ordered a Sexy Balm in Adventure last night! Also the Max Factor Mauve Nude blusher that you love :-). I’ve seen the ‘cucumber’ eye pads in Sainsburys and wondered if they were any good, now it has the AMR stamp of approval, I’ll pick them up next time! I think they’re actually on sale in Sainsburys so, bonus! x

    Hi Ruth,
If you enjoy Anne Tyler may I recommend Carol Shields, particularly her novel Unless. She too writes about families, creativity and womanhood. Truly beautiful writing. And I’m a librarian, so I should know ;-)

I’ve enjoyed David Sedaris in book form and the occasional radio clip – until I saw him at the Brighton Dome two years ago – an evening I will never get back and which annoys me whenever I think about it. Gratuitous, gratuitous bad language and so not funny. Do not waste your time and money if tempted to see him live.
