Diptyque Philosykos: A Life-Long Love Affair

diptyque philosykos eau de toilette

I made a cheeky little Space NK purchase just before Christmas; the Philosykos eau de toilette from Diptyque. This makes it  – by far – my most-repurchased luxury beauty item. I can’t think of any other product I race through so quickly and so religiously keep “in stock”.

I thought that my love of Philosykos pre-dated this blog, but in actual fact I’ve just done some detective work (took all of fifteen seconds) and realised that I discovered the scent when I was invited to the Mayfair store around five years ago. I’ve worn it regularly ever since.

Philosykos is a fig scent: there’s no escaping that. It’s not “hint of fig” or “lightened by the freshness of fig leaf” or “emboldened by the fruitiness of fig”: it’s pure and unadulterated fig. There’s fig around every olfactory corner – fig leaf and, er, fig in the top notes and echoed in the green middle notes and then fig tree (I’m assuming this means the bark?) in the base notes. Now obviously other notes have been added, but they are there to draw out the beauty of the fig, to enhance it, not to mess about with it and be all funky-cool.

If you love a fresh, green perfume, but one that has a slightly masculine, woody edge, then this is for you. It’s clean but earthy, simple but somehow endlessly interesting: it’s high-end Parisian lifestyle shops and it’s chic women who waft about managing to look fabulous in just a grey jersey t-shirt and indigo jeans and white Converse with something cashmere thrown over their shoulders. I have no clue what I’m on about at this point (four-day-old baby lying across me as I type, brain is addled) but I need to make my feelings for Philosykos clear: it’s a life-long love affair.

I’ll never outgrow this perfume, or tire of it –  it’s going to be a life-long love affair. I’ve never come across an occasion that it didn’t suit, but more to the point, I’m comfortable with it as an everyday fragrance staple. It never irks me; there’s never a note that jars or makes me nauseous or slightly claustrophobic. It’s just a classic, plain and simple, and if you haven’t tried it then you should.

I’ve just been on Space NK to look at the new (ish?) perfume version (must have it!) and seen that Space NK are doing their £15 off £60 offer again. The one they do where you get £15 off to discover something new? Hopefully still running by the time this post goes live – apologies if not. Use code EXPLORE17 at Space NK to get the discount.

Diptyque Philosykos Eau de Toilette costs from £60 (or £45 with the code!) at Space NK here.

Hi Ruth – hope you are recovering well.
How does this compare to Jo Malone’s Fig & Cassis?

  2. February 7, 2017 / 8:35 pm

The perfume sounds lovely – and what a great offer! xx

  3. February 7, 2017 / 8:50 pm

It is a good one. I do love fig, I should probably get it. I have Pacifica’s fig and it’s a good cheap stand in. It’s slightly sweeter, though.

Did you say “four-day-old baby”? Congratulations Ruth!

My feelings exactly Ruth. I will love this perfume forever. I’ve been wearing it since 2007, I wore it on my wedding day a few years later and am equally happy wearing it everyday or on the school and nursery runs now. It is timeless and ageless and I hope to still be wearing it when I’m drawing my pension!!

Congratulations again Ruth on the birth of your baby boy! You have a beautiful family. Hope you’re head to toe in newborn and toddler snuggles! Best wishes xx

Dying to try this! Thanks Ruth and congrats on the second baby.

Oh, congratulations! That was quite sneaky how you did that, well done! Hope you, baby and the rest of the family are all well.

You’ve had the baby! Many congratulations indeed! Hope you’re all doing well :) :) :)

I am not into woody perfumes at all, but I get what you mean by describing these women. Again, I dont think I even stand a chance in being one of them, no matter what perfume I wear. I’d be the one with spit on the t-shirt and tomato sauce on the white converse.

I *love* Philosykos too! And funny thing is, I don’t usually like fig scents that much, but somehow Diptyque got it just right <3
And L'Ombre Dans L'Eau (a bit blackberry) is the only fragrance that lasts for hours in my skin. I don't even have the perfume, it's the EDT, but still last an entire day.

Have you tried diptyque Eau plurielle? It’s a multipurpose perfume and if you like roses it is absolutely amazing. By far the best rose scent for me.

Aww big congrats on the baby, Ruth! I’m really getting more into the masculine woody scents as I get older, tempted to give this a try xx

Congratulations, Ruth and family – lovely news!
Thanks for this post, I’m going rush around the corner to Space NK and try Philosykos.
I’m sure this won’t be new to you – but for a green fragrance then Sisley Eau de Campagne is super gorgeous. A lovely and glamorous dear friend of mine picked me up in her one day and, as I opened the door, this fresh but sophisticated waft of green meadows greeted me!

Great review Ruth but rather taken aback that you’re working four days after having your new baby!!!

That was so blink and miss how you snuck in your big news in this post. Congrats. I need to try Phylosikos now.

I love this scent, but can’t justify spending that much on Diptyque. Though my birthday is coming up, maybe I can wrangle my husband into getting it for me. Hehehehe…

This is my signature scent, has been for a very long time. Whenever I wear it I always get asked what I am wearing. I always refuse to say. Horrible I know but I cannot bear to have others around me smell the same. Please stop telling everyone about Philosykos.

Congratulations Ruth on your new baby boy! I really love this scent too, it works all year round and is never over powering. Lots of people ask me what it is. I like the grassy woody notes in it but I just wish the scent lingered for longer on my skin. x

Ah the Ruth effect….the perfume is now all sold out in both sizes in space nk!!
Hope you have managed some sleep today, your gorgeous wee son looks so content X

Oh YES! I absolutely adore this perfume, I’ve been wearing it for about five years too. Fig is definitely one of my all time favourite scents, and I love how it’s *just* fig too. In fact, I think all three of my favourite perfumes only really smell of one thing – Serge Lutens Fleur d’oranger is just orange blossoms and Byredo Inflorescence is just well…blossom, haha.

Other thing I love about Philosykos is that my boyfriend will wear it on days when I want to wear one of my other ones, so I still get to smell it!

Like you it is the beauty purchase I make over and over again. I first discovered it about 16 years ago now. I wear it almost every day. I’m obsessed by fig scent but no matter what else I go to I always come back to this. Although Hermes Un Jardin Mediterranean comes a very very close second.

One of my staples as well. I so agree with how you said it never irks you!! That is a perfect description for this! I tried the EDP of this but didn’t notice so much of a difference to pull me away from the edt.

    The perfume is lovely..

Philosykos is a beauty, but note the difference b/ the EdP and EdT formulations. They are very different scents.
