What’s In My Makeup Bag? Spring 2017

whats in my makeup bag

The title of this post suggests that you’re about to see a load of limited edition makeup from the Spring 2017 collections: not so. Including the season and the year at the end of the title is just a way of me giving some sort of “time stamp” to a feature that I’d like to repeat throughout the year. I could have put the month at the end, but I’m a realist: there’s no way that a) I’ll update my makeup bag that frequently or b) manage to film a makeup video once a month. Not at the moment, at any rate…

So, what is in my makeup bag this very fine Spring in 2017? You’ll be pleased to know that there’s not a pastel eyeshadow in sight, and I haven’t eschewed bronzer for some crazy “Aunt Sally” blush-fest. Instead, there’s a quick and easy BB cream (Clarins, I reviewed it here and am still relying on it for long-lasting coverage and a low-key glow), a foolproof concealer (Bourjois Blur The Lines) and a very slim and lightweight eyeshadow palette from Smashbox that has all the shades I need for a reasonably smouldery eye look.

New finds include the Invisible Bronze bronzer from bareMinerals and the Lip Cheat lipliner from Charlotte Tilbury. Nothing particularly exceptional about the lipliner per se, more that I am bothering to line my lips in the first place. I’ve taken the plunge, in an attempt to re-define my lips and make them look plumper, and actually it has been rather revolutionary – my lipstick looks better and my lips look fuller without the need for any complicated makeup wizardry. Or plastic surgery. Which is a bonus, what with my low-maintenance attitude towards beauty. (And fear of hospitals, needles, procedures-gone-wrong, etc.)

On with the video – there’s a little guest appearance in the first part, which couldn’t be helped. Newborns, eh?! You can find a full product list further on down the page, beneath the screen.

Would love to see a video about sheer lipsticks augmented with liner, just like you do in fbis film BUT with closeups like in your foundation videos. Like you my lipline is fading. I love sheer lipsticks but need help matching them with liner. Thanks Ruth, Ted is adorable.

Love that you always include your little ones in your recent videos — although I know from hearing you that it’s not inevitable! Fresh and easy looks are some of my faves from you so keep em coming xx

I am meaning to make lip liner a staple in my routine as well, given that my lips are surely loosing their plump. Not that they were very plump to start with…

Ideas for future posts – any chance you could do a winter to spring skincare transition type video or column for us? (I described that idea terribly but I’m hoping you know what I mean ..). I’m still slathering my skin with a thick moisturiser, and I’m starting to shine like the sun (honest) and get a few pesky breakouts, it’d be great to get some recommendations before my skin starts to completely rebel.
Ps The adorable baby Ted is welcome to demonstrate with mummy anytime

Hello Ruth! I love your videos – honest and funny as always! I was wondering which YSL Touche Eclat shade you use? I have been wearing the CT Retoucher lately but it’s not giving me the same ‘pow’ look that the Touche Eclat does and I’m going back to re-purchase one soon. Do you stick with shade 1 or veer in to the 2/2.5 category for colour? We have a similar skin tone so I usually know that what suits you will suit my skin tone as well.

Thank you wonder mum #idontknowhowshedoesit xx

Do you know, I’m testing it at the moment. Everyone is raving, but I think it might be a little heavy for me. I need to give it a proper test in the right shade! x
