There has been a huge kerfuffle around the UK launch of Glossier, the beauty brand from brilliant website Into The Gloss. Created by the Into The Gloss beauty editors and very much developed by listening to comments and feedback from their readers, Glossier is a relatively small (but fast-growing) collection of skincare and makeup which – until now – has been pretty hard to get hold of outside of the US.
But it has now landed on the UK shores – no custom charges, no long waits on orders (though I hear there’s something of a hold-up at the moment due to massive demand) and no general sense of unease as to whether your parcel will ever actually arrive.
I couldn’t wait to see what all the fuss was about and was lucky enough to get a few minutes with the founder of the brand, the lovely Emily Weiss, who talked me through the range and left me with a bag of samples to try out. In the video below, I put all of the makeup on my face at once and tell you what I like (or dislike) about it. Pretty basic stuff, but hopefully useful if you’ve seen all of the Glossier fuss and want to make an order.
Interestingly (for me, at least) the product that Emily liked the most is definitely not my own favourite pick. I think Emily cited the multi-purpose Balm Dot Com as her number one “desert island” product, whereas mine would probably be the Cloud Paint blusher, for its amazingly cute packaging and easy-to-blend formula. Actually, for me it would be a tie between Cloud Paint and Boy Brow, which is a brow-plumping and grooming pomade that quickly turns straggly, rubbish eyebrows into slightly bushier, sexier, neater eyebrows. I think Boy Brow was Emily’s other favourite (if I could get my iPhone to play the video of our meeting I’d be able to tell you for sure, but iPhone and I are having issues at the moment) so we were on the same page in that respect, but yeah. The universal lip balm (scented with coconut, or birthday cake, amongst other things) just didn’t float my beauty boat, possibly because I already use Lanolips and this didn’t really bring anything extra to the party. Though it’s perfectly lovely, if you don’t already own a tube of heavy-duty non-sticky lip balm – lighter in texture than Lanolips and easier to spread.
At the risk of spoiling the video, I’ll add that the Perfecting Skin Tint and Stretch Concealer are very, very sheer, so if you’re trying to cover up or mask imperfections then you’re barking up the wrong tree with Glossier. If, however, you have fairly good skin and love that au naturel sort of look that’s weekendy and effortless, just a hint of a tint, then go for it. I’ll do a standalone review of the Skin Tint if anyone’s interested – I did before and after pics with close-ups, as is now my standard foundation-testing procedure. Not that you would call the Perfecting Skin Tint a foundation – Glossier certainly don’t. They say that the formula is breathable and offers an “imperceptible wash of colour” but that it won’t “hide your freckles, spackle your pores, or erase any other evidence that you are, in fact, a real human being.”

Prices are reasonable, I think, with the priming moisturiser starting at £18 and fabulous Boy Brow costing £14 – my favourite skincare product is the Milk Jelly Cleanser*, which is £15, but I will come back with a separate post on that one.
