17 Most-Used Beauty Products of 2017

best beauty products 2017

I only managed to go and film a new video, didn’t I? After two false starts (one of them was realising I’d done the whole thing without actually pressing the record button) I managed to create a short(ish)list of my seventeen most-used beauty products from last year.

As I say in the video, there’s an important distinction between “most-used” products and “favourite” products. These aren’t necessarily my absolute favourites, because favourites could include – say – an incredible, luxurious red lipstick, or a blusher with an amazing compact. Things that might not be used daily, but would certainly press all of the right beauty buttons.

I spent quite a while looking through my notes and working out which things I’d used the most – there were dozens of face creams, loads of bath oils and shower gels and washes and no less than six different foundations that I’d used on rotation, but I eventually managed to get my list down to seventeen items. (It was originally going to be ten, but then I kept seeing 17 Favourites of 2017 videos and I thought that it would be nice to be matchy-matchy with my numbers. It also gave me an extra seven products for my list, which was a welcome addition as I was struggling to narrow it down!)

Anyway, let’s get on, shall we? If you’re in the office, skiving, and can’t watch a video because the sound will come on and give you away then there’s a list of products with links (the spoilers section) further on down the page.

17 for 17. I wonder if that trend will continue and I will be seeing 35 for 35 one day. I know it may sound distant now, but if I have learned one thing it is that time flies.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo is my favorite too. It helped me to clear my skin although I wish it was hydrating but then if its effective then I don’t mind.

I’d rather read something titled “most used” than “favorites” because the fact that you’re using them is a statement in and of itself. The term “favorites” is one of those Gumby-like words that worm in and then worm out, esp. in the beauty industry. I’ve never really understood how something can be a favorite after only two uses, for example, but that’s the cosmetics industry and, more significantly, I think, YouTube and social media for you. If you, Ruth Crilly, with your track record, credentials and ethics, use something repeatedly, that tells me something, and something good. I have many allergies, and so have been using the cosmetics, hair, body care, skin care and grooming products I use, for years. By necessity. I appreciate real-life, real-time, hands-on evaluations, and those require more than a two day trial. So, thanks. And I for one would love to see a regular column on most-used products. Even (esp.?!) if they’re the same ones you mentioned last month, and the month before…
