Things Have Got To Change…

a model recommends

My latest video has quite the dramatic title: Things Have Got To Change. It started off as a video about diet and exercise and the fact that I have a terrible diet and don’t do any exercise, but then I went off on a tangent and it became a video about all of the things I need to get on top of (figuratively speaking, not literally!) in life.

Like the fact I still have my nursing bras and am still shoehorning my post-baby belly (still looks about five months pregnant) into black, high-waisted M&S cotton pants. Like the fact I still wear maternity jeans so that I don’t have to breathe in after lunch and I don’t paint my toenails because it folds my stomach in half when I reach down to my toes, and I don’t like the feeling of belly touching knees.

I’ve had enough. It all needs to change. Along with my penchant for Coca Cola (the hardcore red stuff), mint Magnums, jam on crumpets (every morning, not even a treat) and choc chip Tracker bars, which I scoff down as an energy boost at strategic points throughout the day.

So I’ve put it all into a video and added a part about the future of A Model Recommends, which I’d like you all please to watch and report back on. If you can’t watch (I know how many of you sneakily read this at your desks and can’t play video for fear of giving the skive game away!) then the gist of it all is this: I’m considering merging both of my blogs into one. So The Uphill and A Model Recommends would sit together, on one site. Same for my Youtube channels and my Instagram and Twitter.

Now before you lose your cool, you would be able to filter the content according to what you want to see, so there would be two huge categories at the top of the page that you could switch between, still called A Model Recommends and The Uphill. But by default, all content would be on the main feed together. So beauty, interiors, fashion, life updates and family stuff, all of my interests, all on one site. But easily filtered to your preference, should you only wish to read about sleepless nights and the best jeans to hide hip flab or only wish to watch videos about makeup and skincare.

For those who want things to stay the same, perhaps because they have no interest in one area, things wouldn’t really be much different – one quick click and anything irrelevant or unwanted would disappear. But for those who read everything or who just read one site and regularly ask for more personal posts or pet updates or want to know about my daily routines (routines, ha), I suspect that merging the content would be a massive improvement.

Either way, let me know. The verdict on Instagram for the Instagram accounts was an almost unanimous YES for merging (I think there were three people who preferred separation but hundreds who wanted, for ease, to see everything in one place) and it was virtually the same from Youtube viewers, so I’ll be interested to see what you think about the blogs.

Here’s the video – enjoy the mini house tour. It wasn’t intentional, but I managed to film in about five different places!

Oh, by the way: the dress I wear in the video is from Hush* and is amazing. It’s a t-shirt dress and so comfortable, but does show a lot of leg. Just a warning. I had tanned my legs with tanning drops (review upcoming) and they looked pretty fine, if I may say so myself. The rest of my doughy body was cleverly hidden beneath the t-shirt dress! Hurrah!

    Merge is good!
As a busy mum it means I won’t miss your posts.
I know what you mean about ‘all change’, as soon as my daughter is asleep of an evening I crave junk food, but mainly chocolate. So after I polished off my last Easter egg in one sitting (don’t judge), I have set myself the challenge to not eat chocolate for a month. I’m about 6 days in and it’s going well. I have however developed a new love for trifle.. and toffees..
I am breastfeeding though so that is keeping the weight off but will soon be introducing solid foods!!

As a woman trying to have a baby (for about 6 years now) and failing terribly, I love to be able to read about make up and skincare and your funny writing without the baby stuff. I hope that doesn’t offend.

Hi Heather, I feel like you feel, and like you (at least, if I read correctly between the lines), I sort of feel bad for saying it!
On the other side, I do really hope Ruth follows what makes her feel better though (because I dig her so much! And her beautiful family is so sweet!) but if everything goes into one site/channel, I would really appreciate it if the different contents were very much separated – the occasional crossover excepted of course…
Something about the joys of toddler-induced-sleep-deprived nights makes me feel very bad about myself for not being able to experience the same…

I have a slightly older child so I don’t keenly read all the posts on The Uphill but I might be missing out on something useful because of that. Having it all on the same site would be better.

Do whatever suits you! You’ve had to tough start to 2018 so you’re probably being a little too hard on yourself.

At 7.30am this morning, in a new low, I microwaved my sandwiches in the office microwave instead of my porridge! And I’ve only one baby under 2.

YES! Please go a head with merging everything. I end up checking both places anyway and i have a feeling just have the mental order of just one account in each platform, will resolve in more content in the long run. All the luck in the life declattering. I my self am trying to get back to a healthier life style, now that my baby is two and a half. Throwing of the cloths was the easy part. Good luck

YES to merging! I haven’t watched the video yet, but I was hoping it was going to be able you cutting yourself some slack and figuring out a way to lower your everyday stress level. Outsourcing some home dec, getting a part-time assistant to help you behind the scenes, finding more childcare… something has to give, and I don’t want it to be your mental health! (Um, hi, you don’t know me, but I’ve read your blog for years, so apparently I have OPINIONS! ;) Big hugs for all you do! <3

Hi Ruth. I’ve been a reader from the beginning—since before I finished grad school and started work, when I was still living in a city apartment rather than in my own house, and well before you had your two children and I had mine (now nearly 5 and almost 3!). I still love your posts on makeup and skincare, and I cannot see that changing, but I also find the content on the uphill so (often hilariously) relevant to and reflective of the life I have now. This is my long winded way of wondering how many of your readers have gone though the same kind of life changes and wouldn’t mind you merging your sites in the least. Basically, I love to read anything you write, and I love hearing about the new Chanel lip powder just as much as Angelica’s Peter Rabbit obsession. I also wanted to thank you sharing about infertility, miscarriage, and grief in general—often I feel that I belonged and still belong to some terrible club no one wants to be a member of. Thank you.

Hi Ruth. Yes, merge away! I read all your blogs so if everything is on the same site, that’s a bonus!

  11. Aoife
    April 26, 2018 / 8:27 am

    Definitely merge them into 1.
    I enjoy reading/watching both.
Also, don’t be so hard on yourself, small changes will help. Don’t try and do it all at once and especially not when you’re sleep deprived. We’re all in the same boat. Parenting little ones is hard!

  12. April 26, 2018 / 8:32 am

    Hi Ruth,
I think the strenght of your video’s lies in the combination of things, after all we have enough channels that are exclusively about beauty and it frankly gets to be quite boring at times. But in your video’s in walk the baby’s or the dog or the cat makes a guest appearance, and that’s just what distinghuises (if I spell wrong pardon me, I’m Dutch) your channel from all the others. If you make a choice possible for either beauty or ‘the Uphill’- stuff, you won’t be making life easier for yourself because you would still need to consider what ‘tag’ to give the video, and maybe worry about mixing the subjects of beauty and real life too much. So my suggestion is; stay as you are, a combination of a glamerous model and normal wife and mother, and have just one blog and channel about all possible subjects, because life itself is all about combining the different roles we have anyway!

Yes to the merge…. I enjoy both :-)

  14. April 26, 2018 / 9:12 am

I think I was one of the 3 people who said they’d prefer separation as I’m not interested in children, but in saying that, I like you so much that I still will read about you being a mother, as you inject a certain charm and humour into everything. It sounds like merging is what most of your audience wants, and if it makes your life easier – do it! Also, now I really want a mint Magnum.

    April 26, 2018 / 9:44 am

One vote here for keeping them separate, basically because I can’t deal with change (ironically for a comment on a post titled “Things have got to change”)!! I’m the same as you in that, despite my baby being a year old now, I still wear my gigantic hospital knickers, still wear my maternity leggings, only have nursing bras etc etc. But don’t you think part of it is about not wanting to let go? I’m sure I could do with a big shake up too, but somehow that would feel like moving on from the baby stage, and I’m not sure I can… Likewise I feel as though you merging your sites is really a way of saying that family/baby content will now be posted on A Model Recommends (less of a merger and more of a takeover). And that kind of feels like an ending to me, too, even if it’s technically not. It’s hard, isn’t it! I haven’t watched your video yet so perhaps you’ve covered some of these feelings in it too.

I can really relate to this post! When my baby boy (now a 3 year old on Sunday!!) wasn’t sleeping through the night I couldn’t care less about what I eat and how I looked, I was so sleep deprived that it made day to day a struggle. I was in a survival mode! Going to work in the morning after 1 or 2 interrupted hours of sleep made the 2 pain au chocolates from local shop very justified. As well as having a glass of wine (or two)with my dinner to wind down after a busy day at work and brace myself for another sleepless night. Pizza 3 times a week? YES please. This whole phase lasted 2 years and a half!
In January 2018 I started the change and I can honestly say I feel a thousand times better, but couldn’t have done in 8 months ago, my mental state was not in it!
So I say, don’t force it, start when you are ready and life will slowly get back to normal!
    :) xx

Yes to the merge! My life timings are a bit different than yours (my baby is now 10 weeks old) but I loved both your blogs since I started reading a couple of years ago independently of my life situation.
You’re to me mainly a great writer with such a witty sense of humor that all together makes it easier.
I send you a big hug and all the energy to accomplish your goals (you will!) and also a big thank you for sharing your journey. It’s very inspiring and highly entertaining.

I say merge if it helps you! I read both because I love beauty and have two children simar ages to yours. I work part-time so have ‘work life’ , ‘kids life’ and a little bit of ‘me life’ and used to compartmentalising.
As for ‘Things Have Got To Change’, I feel similarly for similar reasons. I’m not sure I’m motivated enough to change yet, so will see how you get on, sure you’ll inspire me. Good luck!

    Hi Ruth,
I wanted to say, “thank you”. Thank you for being YOU. Being authentic in a world where everyone is only about taking another person out to get to the top. I have been following you for a few years now & love what you post. I actually refer you as my personal “go-to” for all things beauty because you are REAL & NOT a buck O five wet! I would combined your platforms & leave your signature title “A Model Recommends”, since I believe that is what you are most noted for & how I found you discussing your dry shampoo release with COLABS. When I came across your channel/blog, I realized that you were so down to earth & witty, and that even a model has a bad hair day. You make me feel that I can be beautiful when I feel fat & just want to put on my baggy clothes & just eat a piece of chocolate. You are REAL for us 52 year old moms who are struggle with baby weight from 11 years ago!
I started this year on losing the baby weight. I love Pepsi-Cola, straight up SUGAR. I never worked out, I would eat healthy, but loved the Nutella, like I spy in your cupboard, which equals CARBS. Then I found out too much fruit, which I love, honey, & yogurt equals carbs, equals fat. I am 5’3 & did weigh 170 lbs. at the beginning of Jan. 2018. After just 3 1/2 month & still NOT working out, with a physician’s supervision, eating 1200 Calories/daily, 90 – 100 grams of protein & less than 80 CARBS/daily, I am down almost 20 pounds! My set back was EASTER! One taste of my son’s Easter candy & I hit a wall. However, today is a new day to start over & try again.(I use to weigh 135 lbs. 15 years ago before I met my husband) So, long story short, if I can start & do it (and even cheat once in a while – count the carb/calories to trade off ;-)) THEN you can too!
I can’t wait to see how your house turns out, more beauty posts, and this great life journey I have a privilege to be a part of. Never stop, Ruth Crilly, I got your back!

  27. Monique
    April 26, 2018 / 2:06 pm

    Dear Ruth,
I have been a silent (but loyal!) lurker for years… here goes my first comment: I wanted to say that you are so inspiring, and are accomplishing TONS so please be kind to yourself. I just had my first baby four months ago, so I can only imagine what it’s like to have two children while running your own business. In my eyes, you are superwoman! As for the questions you asked in your video – in terms of losing the weight that I gained while I was pregnant, I have found it helpful to make all my lunches for the week over the weekend, and then just freeze them so all I have to do is pop one lunch the microwave during the week. Not having to cook and clean up for lunch during the week is wonderful. (I’m down 40 lbs, but have another 25 to go…Lord help me…haha) And as for your blog – yes, please consolidate! I love the idea of everything you write and film under one website. xx

Merge, I go to both blogs so having it on one will be better.

    April 26, 2018 / 6:25 pm

I would vote for merging! I do believe i’m not the only one who loves reading Your stories due to your unique presenting and quirky yet simple descriptions irregardless if topic is beauty or insight in your personal life. if i wanted “pure” make up reviews there is sea of others bloggers/youtubers etc who is good at it . However i prefer reading your blog due to , well, you . And i do enjoy reading about your lifestyle the most. i assume its just means your blog becomes more like lifestyle blog rather than just beauty blog if you decide on merging. Hopefully you got the idea x all the best x

  35. Laura
    April 26, 2018 / 7:12 pm

Yes to merging them! I’ve read both for years…and read The Uphill before I even got pregnant, just because the way you write is so funny and honest! It was my preparatory education for life with babies down the road :) Go for it!

  36. Laura
    April 26, 2018 / 7:49 pm

Yes merge! I feel like you’ve been posting more family / life stuff on a model recommends rather than the uphill recently & I’m easily confused so would be good to have it all in one place :)

  37. Alexa Aston
    April 26, 2018 / 9:09 pm

Yes please- merge the two sites! I don’t have children but love both A Model Recommends and the Uphill. I think because everything you do is so personal and honest (one of the many reasons they are brilliant) it makes complete sense.
I can absolutely relate to the feeling of struggling to keep your head above water. I am a teacher in senior management, working ridiculous hours, and feel I am spread so thinly I’m not doing anything in my life well enough. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be juggling a demanding job with small children. You are an inspiration. Be kind to yourself Xx

I vote do whatever is easiest for you. My children are in their twenties now but I remember how busy life was when they were small and lack of sleep is horrendous! You make a good point about how stressful life can be these days. I think social media has a lot to answer for. Don’t try to make life too perfect! What I love about the blog are your sense of humour and your ‘stories’. Good luck with all the changes.

  42. Rachel
    April 27, 2018 / 12:30 pm

Yes to merging. I was one of those advocating for the separation before but that was when The Uphill was just beginning and each site seemed very focused on its own content. Now both sites are evolving as your own life naturally evolves to include a broader spectrum of content, often overlapping. Makes sense to just do one that is not limited to any form of content — whether holidays, writing books, interior decorating, style, family, health, beauty, food or wherever you wish to go. Using your name makes sense because that does not limit you to any specific content. My two cents from a reader and well-wisher over several years.

  43. Kelly Glen
    April 27, 2018 / 4:59 pm

It sounds like a really good idea to combine the two websites. Even though I don’t have any children I still like reading about you and your family. You write everything in such a way that you are very relatable and whatever you write I would read. I am sure it would make your life so much easier as well.

    April 27, 2018 / 10:27 pm

My “baby” is 22 and studying in Sweden, but I remember this time in my life vividly! Having gotten a little perspective, I can can offer this:
    1) Buy some clothing that suits you now. I put off buying anything new, not wanting to waste money on clothes that I hoped would be too big in a few months! The boost I got from wearing a pair of white jeans that fit me, albeit a larger size than I liked, was palpable. I felt so much more confident and that led eventually to making more of an effort about food and exercise. You’re on the right track with the t-shirt dress and tanned legs!
    2) Your babies are your most important project right now, and much of the conflict you are feeling comes from trying to give equal weight to other important parts of life. It felt really good when I finally just admitted that out loud. It’s not that other things aren’t important, it’s just that they’ll have to take their place after the babies for a while. I was so afraid I’d lose respect at work, that I’d miss out on opportunities, and that my friends would forget me if I didn’t keep doing what I’d always done before the baby. Instead, my friends were so relieved because they were in the same boat. I was amazed at how people at work responded – when they wanted me to go to a meeting in California, the project lead arranged for my daughter (then 5 months) to fly with me, as well as a nanny onsite. (It was still too much and I didn’t go.) So feel free to just say it out loud, we’ll fall into line and keep reading.
Thanks for being so honest and real!

Hi Ruth, more than happy for the content to be merged. Was interested in your comments too re meal planning, limiting quick unhealthy options (as opposed to occasional treats), and finding the motivation to get moving – sometimes it’s a battle no matter your circumstances. Working on developing healthy habits I guess. Anyway, really enjoyed the video (need to catch up with your other recent posts too). Hope this feedback was helpful – good luck!

Hi Ruth, I think merging your two sites would be fine. My interest is beauty and I don’t have children, but it wouldn’t bother me in any way seeing everything on one site. Go with whatever makes life easier for you!

    April 30, 2018 / 11:27 am

Yes to merging! I don’t actively seek out the ‘baby’ stuff as my daughter is a teenager now, but I’d still be happy to read it, if only to remind me how far we’ve come, and that no matter how stressful/tiring/worrying anything might seem while one is in the thick of it, it pretty much always works out fine in the end. Your writing is so warm and witty and relatable that I reckon I would read no matter what you are writing about.

Hi Ruth, just catching up with your more recent videos but for what it is worth – I say merge the two too! Imagine all that extra time you will have by not having to stop and think which site a feature should appear on?! Haha, if only! I have 2 little people a similar age to yours – and so I say this tongue in cheek as I am pretty sure that ‘extra’ time is consumed in the blink of an eye – but your blogs have always been really well laid out, so am sure it will be simple enough to search for what people be relevant to them (all of it in my case!) xxx
