This post almost didn’t happen. There was an unexpected blast of ridiculously good weather today, here in Bath-and-its-Surrounding-Villages - bikini weather, pretty much - and instead of sequestering myself in the work cabin to tip-tap away on the laptop keyboard, I grabbed my book (Fruit Fly, it has grown on me and now I am thoroughly enjoying it) and sat out on the roof terrace, slow-cooking myself in the sun.
The roof terrace outside of our bedroom is one of the very best things about where we live. a) the views are just brilliant, it’s like being in a film, b) it’s a total sun trap and at least five degrees hotter (how?! why?!) than being in the garden below it and c) the kids sort of forget that it is there and so don’t come looking for me.
Here’s a brief lookabout on my roof terrace:
So yes, I got distracted. I had to dig out the shorts that I had packed away in one of those horrendous plastic storage things that are half bag, half box, and I had to spritz myself with the remains of the holiday suntan lotion (was actually very satisfying, using up the dregs) because the heat was all such a lovely surprise, but I had a few completely blissful hours of feeling the warmth creep into my very bones.
I did at one point lie down on the tiles, cushion beneath head but otherwise unpadded, and have a little sleep. I couldn’t be bothered to go and get the sunlounger cushions because these had already been stowed away, and reading in the sun had sent me into such a completely soporific state that I just lay right down on the tiles and had a forty minute nap!
I’m going to pay for that, I tell you. I can already feel that my neck has sort of seized to my shoulders, if that is possible. I can add the new pains to my existing ones: muscle pains in places I didn’t even know I had muscles, thanks to the Sculpt 30 exercise classes I’ve been doing. I mentioned these classes in my last post (they are on the Peloton app) but didn’t go into too much detail at the time: they are a cross between Pilates and Barre and quite often they activate teeny, tiny muscles that are a complete surprise.
After the paywall: haunted houses and the £500 calendar I can’t find an unbiased review on…
