Scammers are getting clever. Story here. I had a problem with my sink that was leaking badly. Contacted my landlord via whatsapp explaining the urgent situation as the cupboard below was getting really wet. Anyway 5 mins later, I get this call from a unknown number (again waiting for the landlady who usually phones anyway). The called is Indian sounding and far away. She proceeds to describe what I told my landlady but obv not word for word. Then quickly she asks for my credit card details so the job can get done quicker. So, then my hairs on my arm go up & I ask her ok, if she knows my problem what is my address and my landlord's name. Sorry, Ma'am can't disclose that info. Right. So I hung up, she phoned me back. I then blocked her and reported her via Android. What freaked me out really freaked me out was that I had typed out a message on whatsapp that's supposed to be secure & someone, somewhere picked up something and called me. It's frightening that you think something then you get 20 million adverts on it on your phone, now you can't even have a conversation and a scammer phones.

I had a scam call almost exactly the same, down to abuse wording as well. It was quite scary, not come across that on scam calls before! And made me feel both upset and annoyed for days. had forgotten about the iPhone screening, turning it on now for sure..

I've found a way of having some fun with it and almost look forward to getting one now - and am peeved if it's one of those robot ones saying they're offering me a job. These are the things I do to amuse myself - always wait for them to speak and then:

I've got a bocarina nose flute which when you get the hang of it, allows you talk exactly like a Clanger! So I answer their questions but in Clanger which tickles me no end.

You know that game where you keep repeating exactly what the other person has said to you? That. It's sooo annoying and there's absolutely no escape for the victim - 'why are you repeating everything?'. 'Why are you repeating everything?'. They soon go off in a huff!

I also have a toy duck caller thing so in much the same way as with the nose flute (but not quite as fun). just talk to them in duck. Most of the time they give up early but the other day the caller actually started quacking back at me which was fun!

I rarely answer my phone, unless I am expecting a call (from an identified contact). Friends and family text first to ask whether it’s a good time for a call. Any other callers, I figure, can leave a voice mail or text me.

Even so, I do have the iPhone screening feature turned on.

I don't know about all Android phones, but Pixel phones do have a call screening feature that sounds similar. It asks them their reason for calling and it shows on the screen. Not sure how it chooses when to do it, because it does let through some numbers, I think when the number is registered. Like I haven't saved my dentists number in my phone but because it's registered on Google Maps it comes up with the dentist practice, instead of unknown number? Anyway, the vast majority hang up, the only people who have given a reason have said 'Freddies Flowers', but since that's either a scam, or they are trying to get me to renew my flowers subscription, I don't answer. It's like having a receptionist 😅
