The Classic Wool Coat: A January Sales Investment

hush aw18 fashion

I was zooming through the online – virtual –  aisles at Hush, looking for an entirely different link to something, when I stumbled across the amazing Pelle coat, pictured above. I was genuinely surprised to see it there because I assumed that it would have completely sold out very early on. At the time of writing, all sizes are still available and the coat, which is heavy as a horse blanket and made from the most gorgeous wool, is reduced from £219 to £110.

The reason I assumed it would have sold out is because it’s such a solid classic; the smart longline shape, the sophisticated check pattern – I’ve worn it more than any other coat this winter. (I was sent it to shoot for my Hush advertorial a few months ago.) Mainly over jeans and trainers, so it’s not even one of those coats that you have to save for best, but it looks immensely impressive when you do a bit of power-dressing beneath it too.

And – the true style litmus test! – every time I wear the Pelle coat* I get asked where it’s from. This always pleases me greatly anyway, but a few people have also assumed that it was one of those coats that requires a secured loan to be able to pay for it. And it’s not.

(I very rarely spend ridiculous amounts on clothes, I hasten to add. I don’t know how my friends and family have come to think of me this way… I used to spend quite ludicrous amounts, when I was newly employed (ish) and let off the familial leash, but adult life and doing up houses forced the end of that habit. Mind you, things were so much cheaper when I was in my early twenties – I remember buying a Miu Miu bag for £185! My first Mulberry was a big, heavy leather tote and I’m sure that was £450. Even that is a crazy amount when you think about it, but still miles cheaper than that would be now. Oh, those halcyon days when we moaned about a pint being £2.65 and I baulked at the thought of buying a Shoreditch two-bed flat because it was £185,000. It would probably be five times that much now. More.)

Where was I? The Pelle. It’s not often you find superior quality and something so covetable – and useful – in the sales. The thing you find is usually a lime green netting mini skirt reduced from £1,342 to £280 and people buy it because it’s Balenciaga. Bargain! The Pelle coat will last forever. You could captain a ship in it, you could stride across fields in it, it looks equally good over smart or casual attire and – as many of my friends have exclaimed – looks absolutely excellent with trainers. A proper investment without the usual “oh, think of this as an investment” price tag.

You can find it here* online – £110, as I said. I have a size 10 and I think it just about runs true to size, but I always buy two sizes in everything these days (10 and 12) because I never know which way things will lean and I can’t be bothered to wait in twice. Let me know how you get on. Note: I’m going to hazard a guess that this coat will look slightly more streamlined the taller you are and also, the belt is the longest belt of any garment I have ever owned. I mean, you could lasso a bloody cow with it it’s that long. Huge. Miles long. I have no idea why, unless you’re supposed to bandage yourself up in it around the middle!

So late to the party on this, but… I left my winter coat in a rental car in Hawaii, rental company swears they haven’t seen it (hmmm…) so I invested in this lovely coat as a replacement – what a happy end to the tale, it’s wonderful!

Ordered it Monday and it made it all the way to Japan by Friday – wow!

Fab recommendation, I can see this lasting many more winters than my poor rental car coat (which lasted three weeks!)

Thanks so much for this recommendation! Mine arrived today and it’s lovely and really great quality. Bargain and I wouldn’t have found it without your blog post. Love the box that it came in as well.

Hey Ruth, i fell in love with Hush brand due to your often recommendations. However there is huge minus with this brand. Despite it being modern and brilliant quality not everyone is tall enough to be able to wear it as it meant to be worn. Being 5’4″ i often have to send back their beautiful dresses just because i look ridiculous in them. I have however adjusted the ones i really like but not everyone is willing to pay extra to get them adjusted on top of regular price. Considering UK’s average female height is 5’3″ i’m surprised they don’t do petite line or just shorter versions of their clothes it would of been hit. I quess this is also why this coat is still available because although its truly beautiful it sadly would be awkward length on me , think of midi skirt jumpsuit in shape of coat x

      Hi Christine

This is just what I was thinking… at just 158 cm (not so) tall all those coats and dresses are just not for me

Wish I had a need for lovely, wool coats like that, but Texas (USA) weather never gets cold enough, darn it. You look stunning and I love your hair up.

And the print is absolutely gorgeous! I am already set with a coat for winter and don´t need another one, but it is a beauty indeed.

Do you ever buy from Rails? I think you’d like a lot of their offerings.

My god! I love this coat, but it’s wool and I would be itching with hives everytime I wore it. I bought myself a long down-to-my-ankles cashmere coat when I was 21 for £300 and it lasted me 11 years. I was hearbroken when I eventually had to throw it out. My nickname was The Scottish Widow because it was long and black and I used to glide when walking LOL X

Lovely coat! I have a couple heavy winter coats but I really do need to invest in a proper “going out” coat for the winter.

I admired this coat when you did the advert earlier and now i just need to get it. It seems the perfect coat that works both in the city and countryside, dressed up or down. thrown over casual for the school run to stay cozy and look pulled together (a bit?) or taken to the city. Its really my favorite sort of piece these days…dresses up the casual and sort of grounds the dressy? And it looks like they ship all over the world for just an extra 12 pounds! Thanks so much for the tip! One will be heading to California where it is currently pouring rain and all i want to do is be cozy and wear a blanket indoors and out.

That is so true regarding the lifetime investment. I have a “dress coat” purchased over 15 years ago and I still get compliments and I bought it at a steal. Classic Style never goes out of style.

Yep, still have coats from 10-15 years ago that I wear! Although they are slightly tighter around the middle on me now! : )
